If I have a fear of being a pilot should I take flying lessons to overcome my fear?

then dont become a pilot, i have a fear of falling from extreme heights, thats why im not a steel erection worker

It depends how bad you wish to overcome the fear, not how bad the fear is. If you really want to do it then it should not matter how scary it is to you.

yes dont be a pilot please. i would have the hell scared out of me if you were flying the plane i was on.

Why would you go looking for a fear, and a way to overcome it? If you don't want to be a pilot, don't be a pilot.

If, however, you want to fly, but you're afraid, then by all means, start flying lessons. You'll sort it out fairly fast -- one way or the other.

Good luck!

If I've read correctly, you're frightened of becoming a pilot. Don't worry, you can't wake up one day and find yourself in a cockpit thousands of feet high at the controls of an airplane.:-)

However, if I've understood correctly, you want to become a pilot, but you're frightened of flying, or not being capable of handling an aircraft, or of all the things they say can go wrong up there so high, or maybe a bit of all.

Maybe you should think, fears aside, of what you really want to do. If it's piloting, then take a few initiation flights with an instructor, tell him or her about your fears, and you'll soon know if it's really what you want to do or not. Best of Luck!!!

Using a simulator environment.

I've never heard of anyone (and I'm a former flight instructor who has taught many) who had a fear of being a pilot. Sounds like you might instead have a fear of heights (Acrophobia) and therefore flying. I had some students who fit the description and most were doing it (taking lessons) to overcome their fear or impress someone else.

It can be done but I would suggest if you are doing it for just this reason to find someone who knows how to introduce fearful people to flying and go fly with them a bit. Usually having your hands on the controls and being the one who is making the airplane change it's attitude (climb, descend, bank, etc..) is all that is needed to feel more comfortable with flying. From there you can decide if being a pilot is something you really want to do.

FYI: Flying is considered to be the safest form of transportation in the United States. Stats from the Dept of Transportation state that airline travel is 29 times safer than driving an automobile.

If you had a real phobia of flying, you'd break out in a cold sweat at the sight of an airplane. Sounds lik you fear could easily be overcome. If you don't intend to be a pilot, then just pay for someone to take yo uup in a little plane - a whole lot less involved than flying lessons.

split the difference. It's easier to explain the expenditure to your health insurance for shrink visits and meds than it is to try to get them to reimburse flying lessons.

That said, flying lessons will teach you more about aircraft and the professionality and organization of the people who'll be flying as you travel.

And if your fear is truly of becoming a pilot, then don't.

You probably shouldn't be a pilot if your afraid of it. Unless you intend on putting the safety of lives at risk. Switch interests.

Yes. It is possible to be afraid of something that you do not know anything about. Learn something about it and then re-evaluate your fear. Usually most people are afraid of what might happen while flying, not the actual flying or being the pilot. But, what ever the fear, the only thing you can do is face it to see if it will change. If after you have tried it and still have the fear, at least you'll have a story for your grand-kids.

Fears often stem from the unknown. Learning about something that you are afraid of can help you overcome it. Do you know which aspect of being a pilot you are afraid of? Discuss this with a flight instructor and s/he will probably assure you that you aren't the first or last student to have this concern. Decide together how you can resolve to work on it. Simply learning piloting skills and putting in hours may help you- but first I'd suggest finding out about flying lessons, what they consist of, and perhaps even taking a sample flight.

in a word...no

you would probaby panic in an emergency and put other peoples lives at risk. how about bus driving instead?

No. Switch careers. There are many other jobs besides aircraft pilot.

If you are afraid of becoming a pilot, dont become a pilot.

Assuming you have a fear of either closed spaces or heights then flying lessons would not help, no.

whoa. lolol, maybe u shouldn't. i knoe u're not going to be a pilot anytime soon, but i doubt flying lessons will help. one major hurdle u'd have to face is getting an instructor willing to go there with u. there are many other ways that're cheaper and less dangerous to alleviate ur fear of flying and piloting.
